Women’s Basketball Tips off 2020-21 Season Wednesday with Samford

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Game one of the 2020-21 season tips off at 12 p.m. CT on Wednesday when the Crimson Tide hosts the Samford Bulldogs in women's basketball action. Tickets are on sale for the opener for $1 and can be purchased through the Alabama Ticket Office.

OPENING TIP
- Alabama returns to action for the first time in 265 days when it host the Samford Bulldogs in the 2020-21 season opener. The Crimson Tide played its final game of the 2019-20 campaign on March 5 at the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Greenville, S.C. before the remainder of the season was canceled due to COVID-19 on March 13.
- The Crimson Tide finished the season .500 in SEC play (8-8) for the first time since 2001-02 and made a late push to the NCAA tournament with its two wins over top-15 teams in back-to-back games for the first time in program history.
- Alabama's schedule currently consists of nine non-conference games and 16 SEC matchups, which will begin on New Year's Eve.
- Wednesday's contest between the Tide and Bulldogs will be the 10th between the two programs and first since 2002. Alabama leads the series, 7-2, however both of Samford's wins have come on the last two occasions. In the 2002 installment, the Bulldogs edged the Tide, 61-55, in Tuscaloosa.
- The majority of last year's team is back, including four starters and 10 overall letterwinners.
- Statistically speaking, Alabama returns 79.2 percent of its scoring, including its top two point-producers in Jordan Lewis and Jasmine Walker, and 75.8 percent of its rebounding, led by Walker.
ABOUT SAMFORD
- Samford finished the 2019-20 season with an 18-14 overall mark and a 10-4 record in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs won the SoCon Tournament and were slated for the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament before the season's abrupt end.
- Samford is under the direction of second-year head coach Carley Kuhns and returns leading scorer in Natalie Armstrong.
- Two of the team's five starters are back for the 2020-21 campaign as well as six of its letterwinners from a year ago.
- The Bulldogs were picked to finished third in the league this year behind Mercer, a future Tide opponent, and Chattanooga. Armstrong was also one of 10 selected to the Preseason All-SoCon Team.
