Alexa Guarachi and doubles partner Desirae Krawczyk picked up the win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4
PARIS – University of Alabama women's tennis alum Alexa Guarachi advanced to the second round of the French Open for the first time in her career Thursday after picking up a first-round win with doubles partner Desirae Krawczyk.
Seeded 14th heading into this year's Open, Guarachi and Krawczyk combined to earn a 6-3, 6-4 win to take down the Australian duo of Storm Sanders and Ellen Perez in the opening round at Roland-Garros Stadium. It marked Guarachi's and Krawczyk's second win in the past month over Sanders and Perez, previously knocking them off in the championship final of the Istanbul Open, 6-1, 6-3. Guarachi and Krawczyk return to action Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. CT against Lauren Davis and Sabrina Santamaria.
Guarachi and Krawczyk arrived at the tournament fresh off a strong September on the WTA circuit, taking home the title at the Istanbul Open and advancing to the championship final at the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
This marked Guarachi's third time advancing past the first round in a Grand Slam tournament, having advanced to the second round of the Australian Open earlier this year and making a run to the third round of the 2019 U.S. Open. She is currently ranked No. 45 in the world in the Women's Tennis Association doubles rankings.
