The pair will represent Mexico in hopes to qualify for the U-20 World Cup in August
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Rising sophomore midfielder/defender Reyna Reyes and incoming freshman defender Tanna Sanchez Carreto will compete in the 2020 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central, and Caribbean Association Football) Women's U-20 Championship as members of Team Mexico. The competition will be held Feb. 22 to Mar. 8 in the Dominican Republic, where the top two teams will qualify for the U-20 World Cup in August.
The pair last competed in the 2018 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, placing second to the United States, 3-2, but still earning a qualifying spot. Mexico made it all the way to the final game at the 2018 U-17 World Cup, but fell short to Spain, 2-1.
"I'm looking forward to meeting Team USA again and this time, hopefully taking the first-place trophy," Reyes said. "As a team we want to work together, be disciplined, and find our rhythm from the second the whistle is blown."
The U-20 Mexico team is entering this year's competition ranked second out of the 41 countries within the league, under the No. 1 United States.
"My goal is to win the qualifiers, but I think it is important to go step by step until we reach the final," said Sanchez Carreto. "We know it won't be easy. All teams play at a high level and want to get the ticket to the World Cup."
Mexico's first match will be Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. against Puerto Rico to continue moving throughout the bracket.
