Capan, Shore both rank among top-25 golfers following Friday’s first round of action
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The No. 21-ranked Alabama men's golf team carded a score of 14-over par 294 and is in 13th overall following the opening round of play at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational.
The Crimson Tide – one of 11 ranked teams in the 15-team field – boasts two individuals who finished the day among the top 25 as Frankie Capan III and Davis Shore led UA through the opening 18 holes of play.
Leading The Way
- Capan, a sophomore, was solid throughout the Tide's opening round of play. The North Oaks, Minn., native played under par the entire round heading into the 18th hole. However, Capan, who teed off the final hole of the day with a score of 2-under, carded a double bogey and was forced to end the day with his even par round of 70. He will enter Saturday's second round of action in a tie for 13th overall.
- Sophomore Davis Shore, competing in his first stroke play tournament as a starter since last February, had a solid performance in his return to the lineup. The Knoxville, Tenn., native collected two birdies and three bogeys to end the day in a tie for 21st with a 1-over 71.
Other Performers
- Freshman Thomas Ponder is in a tie for 67th after he carded a 6-over par 76 on the par 70, 7,219-yard famed Olympia Fields Country Club course.
- Sophomore Prescott Butler (78) and junior Wilson Furr (80) round out the Crimson Tide golfers in 73rd and 80th, respectively.
- Freshman Simms Abney, who is competing as an individual this weekend, is in a tie for 79th with a 78.
Fun Fact
- After shooting 1-over par through the first 10 holes of his round, Capan caught fire and recorded birdies on three of the next four holes (No. 11, 12 and 14) to sit at 2-under par and in a tie for second place overall until his double bogey on the par 4, 496-yard 18th hole.
