Alabama Swimming and Diving Sends Four to World University Games in Italy

The Crimson Tide contingent includes Robert Howard (United States), Sezin Eligul (Turkey), Leonie Kullmann (German) and Zane Waddell (South Africa)
NAPOLI, Italy – When the 2019 World University Games get underway on July 4 in Napoli, Italy, the Alabama Crimson Tide will be well represented. The 30th "Summer Universiade" will be held July 4-9, featuring college students from around the world.
The Tide's contingent includes:
- A 2019 senior, Robert Howard will make his national-team debut as part Team USA's 400 relay squad. Howard, a native of Alexander City, Ala., is an NCAA Champion, All-American and Scholastic All-American who was named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Year in the spring.
- Zane Waddell, a rising senior at Alabama, will represent his native South Africa, will have a full slate, swimming the 50m and 100m freestyles as well as the 50m and 100m backstroke. Waddell, an NCAA Champion and All-American, hails from Bloemfontein, South Africa.
- Leonie Kullmann, a rising junior, will compete in the 200m and 400m freestyles for her native Germany. An Olympian, All-American and school record holder, Kullmann is from Dresden, Germany.
- Sezin Eligul, also a rising junior, will swim for Turkey in the 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and the 100m freestyle. Eligul is a native of Istanbul, Turkey.
The World University Games takes place every two years and brings student-athletes together from around the world to compete in multiple sports. The last games were held in 2017 in Taiwan.
