Bama Golf Summer Swings: Crimson Tide Contingent Continue to Shine in Summer Competitions

Furr leads way with a top-three finish at the 113th Southern Amateur Championship, trio opens play at Western Am this week
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Both present and future Alabama men's golfers continue to shine in summer competitions during the month of July, highlighted by rising junior Wilson Furr's third-place finish at the 113th Southern Amateur Championship.
In addition to highlighting Furr's performance in the second installment of Bama Golf Summer Swing, newcomer Thomas Ponder reached match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur, which also featured soon-to-be freshman Tyler Lipscomb. Meanwhile, rising junior Davis Shore returned to tournament action when he competed at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier held in Columbus, Ohio.

Recap: Rising junior Wilson Furr continued his stellar play when he tied for third overall at the 113th Southern Amateur Championship, which was contested July 17-20 at the Founders Course at Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark. This came after he placed third overall at the 2019 Mississippi State Amateur Championship on June 20-23, carding a 72-hole total of 7-under par 277 (70-70-70-67). At the Southern Am, Furr had another strong showing as he finished with a 9-under 275 (67-71-68-79). Over the two tournaments, the Jackson, Miss., native has not recorded a round over par while seven of eight round have been below par.
In addition to a pair of third-place finishes this summer, Furr carded a 36-hole total of 9-under par 135 (66-69) to earn one of the two automatic spots at the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship, which was played on the Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, Miss., on July 9. The 119th edition of the U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 11-18 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. It will mark Furr's third appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship. He last competed in the 117th edition of the event in 2017, which was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. That year, he failed to reach the match play portion of the event as he finished at 11-over par 151 (74-77). He also reached the field in 2016 when it was held in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., at Oakland Hills Country Club where he carded a 7-over par 147 (73-74) to fall short of match play.

Recap: Thomas Ponder was one of two Alabama rising freshmen to have competed at the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which was held on July 15-20 in Toledo, Ohio at the Inverness Club. Ponder made the cut to match play as he carded a 7-over par 149 (77-72) and tied for 50th overall to earn one of the 64 slots. In his opening match playing against Australia's Elvis Smylie, Ponder won four of the first nine holes and held on for a 3 & 2 win to advance to the round of 32. Ponder went to to fall in a narrow 1up defeat to Austin Greaser. This was Ponder's third consecutive U.S. Junior Am appearance, also earning a spot in 2017 and 2018.

Recap: Tyler Lipscomb joined Thomas Ponder as one of two Alabama rising freshmen who competed at the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which was held on July 15-20 in Toledo, Ohio at the Inverness Club. Lipscomb finished the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event with a 14-over 156 (77-79), which missed the cut. The Carrollton, Ga., native earned a spot in the prestigious event when he tied for first overall with a 1-under par 70 at the sectional qualifying tournament held at the Country Club of Birmingham.

Recap: Simms Abney continues his solid play this summer with a runner-up finish at the 68th Cotton States Amateur, which was play July 24-28 at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, La. After finishing 36 holes of stroke play, Abney earned the No. 4 overall seed after carding a 3-under par 141 (72-69). Abney then defeated Logan Young (1up), Dustin Hasley (7&5), Palmer Hays (2&1) and Lance Yates (3&1) to reach the final match where he felt to Ole Miss' Charlie Miller (6&4)

Recap: Davis Shore played in his first competitive tournament since last February when he competed at the 2019 U.S. Amateur Qualifier, which was played in Columbus, Ohio on the Ohio State Scarlet Course. Shore had been sidelined from competitive competition with an injury that forced him to the sidelines for the last five months. Shore had a respectful showing as he tied for 16th overall with a 36-hole total of 8-over par 150 (76-74). Despite failing to qualify, the Knoxville, Tenn., native remains on pace to make his return to the Crimson Tide lineup this fall.

Recap: The Alabama men's golf team will be well-represented at the 2019 Western Amateur Championships, which will tee off Tuesday, July 30, at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. The trio of Frankie Capan III, Wilson Furr and Davis Shore will tee off the stroke play portion of the event at 11:40 a.m. ET on Monday. Following 36 holes of stroke play, the field will be trimmed to 64 individuals for match play which will last from Aug. 1-3.
