The Netherlands National Team and Merel van Dongen continue their history-making run into the semifinals
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Netherlands and former Alabama women's soccer star Merel van Dongen (2012-14) advanced into the semifinals of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France after a 2-0 victory over Italy on Saturday.
Van Dongen made her third consecutive start and played the entire quarterfinals match for the Netherlands to reach its first ever semifinal at the tournament.
The game started off stifling with very few opportunities for either team, but after the break, the Dutch increased the pressure and Netherlands' all-time top scorer Vivianne Miedema ended the scoring drought. Then, Stefanie van der Gragt found the net with another header with 10 minutes left to play in Valenciennes.
The result means Holland continues their history-making run and will face Sweden in the second match of the semifinals bracket on Wednesday.
