Celia Jimenez Delgado and the Spanish National Team’s FIFA Women's World Cup run comes to an end
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The reigning FIFA Women's World Cup holders, the United States National Team advanced to the tournament's quarterfinals on Monday, defeating Spain by a final score of 2-1 at Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims, France.
The loss officially ends former Crimson Tide standout Celia Jimenez Delgado (2015-17) and the Spanish National Team's second trip to the FIFA Women's World Cup and first appearance to the Round of 16.
Megan Rapinoe scored twice on penalty kicks, the first came in the seventh minute, but Spain responded right back two minutes later with an equalizer from Jennifer Hermoso, marking the first goal allowed by the Americans since April. The second goal came in the 75th minute after video replay confirmed a foul, as the United States captured their 10th straight victory.
Jimenez Delgado saw action in one Women's World Cup match against China, logging four minutes.
Up next, former Alabama standout Merel van Dongen (2012-14) and the Netherlands will face Japan Tuesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. CT on FS1.
