
Alabama in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Update Number Three

Former Crimson Tide standouts Merel van Dongen and Celia Jimenez Delgado will both compete in the Round of 16
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The group stage wrapped up on Thursday at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup and there is now a one-day break before the Round of 16 gets going on Saturday in France.
Former Crimson Tide standout Merel van Dongen (2012-14) earned the start for the Netherlands and played in Thursday's entire final group stage match against Canada. The Netherlands finished top of Group E, with a perfect nine-point record after beating Canada 2-1 thanks to goals from Anouk Dekker and Lineth Beerensteyn. The Dutch will take a few days off before facing Japan Tuesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. CT on FS1.
Alabama alumnus Celia Jimenez Delgado (2015-17) and the Spanish National Team made history by qualifying for the knockout stage for the first time, after finishing in 0-0 draw to China on Monday. Jimenez Delgado checked into the game at the 86-minute mark to record her first four minutes of play in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The United States National Team beat Sweden 2-0, and with the win, the U.S. captured the Group F victory and will now face Spain in the knockout phase on Monday, June 24 at 11 a.m. CT on FS1. The U.S. have scored 18 goals and have yet to allow a goal against, so far.
