Merel Van Dongen and the Netherlands advance to Round of 16, while Celia Jimenez and Spain to face China Monday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Former Crimson Tide standout Merel van Dongen (2012-14) and the Netherlands booked their place in the last 16 in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Cameroon on Saturday.
Van Dongen checked in at the 86-minute mark to secure the win against Cameroon. Dominque Bloodworth scored a goal, while Vivianne Miedema scored two goals, to become the Netherland's all-time leading goal scorer with 60.
The Netherlands join France, Germany and Italy who are also already through to the final 16. Up next, the Dutch will face Canada Thursday, June 20 at 11 a.m. CT.
Celia Jimenez Delgado (2015-17) and the Spanish National Team will play their final group stage match Monday against China at 11 a.m. CT. Another win would be enough to see them through to the knockout rounds, which lands both of Alabama's Women's World Cup representatives in the final 16.
