Alabama Athletics Continues Strong Showing in NCAA's Academic Progress Rate

A total of 15 Crimson Tide teams posted APR scores better than 980, including 12 that scored 990 or better
INDIANAPOLIS - All 21 University of Alabama athletics teams continue to score well above the national cutoff standard in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR), which the NCAA announced this week. Figures released cover the four-year period extending from the 2014-15 through 2017-18 school years.
"Our mission at The University of Alabama is to provide a first-rate education that serves as a strong foundation for the future," UA Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. "Our latest NCAA APR numbers are a testimony to the importance and focus that everyone – our student-athletes, faculty, coaches and staff – puts on that mission."
Overall, 15 Crimson Tide teams posted scores above the national average in their respective sports, including five that bettered the national average of their sport by 10 points or more.
Alabama football matched its program record of 984, which bettered the national average for Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams by 20 points. The Crimson Tide men's basketball team posted a 995 APR, bettering the national average by 28 points. Baseball, with a 985 APR, bettered the national average by nine points.
Five Alabama teams – men's basketball, gymnastics, softball, women's golf and volleyball - earned public recognition from the NCAA for their APR scores figuring in the top-10 percentile nationally among teams in those sports.
In addition to national recognition, eight Crimson Tide teams ranked among the top three in their respective sports in the Southeastern Conference, with gymnastics, softball, women's golf and volleyball ranked No. 1 in the league. Football and men's swimming and diving are ranked second in the SEC, while baseball and men's basketball checked in at third in the league among their respective sports.
Women's golf, gymnastics, softball and volleyball all posted a perfect 1,000 for their four-year score. Those four teams were joined by rowing (997), men's swimming and diving (996), women's swimming and diving (996), men's basketball (995), soccer (993), women's tennis (992), women's indoor track and field (991) and women's cross country (990) among the 12 UA programs with scores of 990 or better.
Women's outdoor track and field (988), baseball (985) and football (984) were among the UA teams that posted scores of 980 or better.
"Our APR numbers continue demonstrate The University of Alabama's commitment to doing things the right way," UA senior associate athletics director for student services Jon Dever said.
The Academic Progress Rate measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. It also serves as a predictor of graduation success. The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 930 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. An APR of 930 translates to approximately a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
