Freshman Frankie Capan III leads the Crimson Tide in 12th place overall after opening 18 holes of play
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 28/30 Alabama men's golf team finished the opening round of play at the 2019 NCAA Athens Regional on Monday in 12th place overall after carding a team score of 18-over par 302. The Crimson Tide will enter Tuesday's second round 10 strokes back of the fifth-place cut line to reach the national championships.
"We started with the energy that's needed and a game plan to be successful, but unfortunately we just weren't," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "Golf is a very hard game. We have our own issues that we just have not been able to overcome and just couldn't get that fourth score today. We certainly put ourselves behind the eight-ball. These are the moments that we will see how we respond. It feels pretty low at this moment to be honest with you, but sometime between now and tomorrow we need to regroup and play to a high standard. There's 36 more holes to play and we are good enough to overcome this. I think if we have a couple of really good days, which we are capable of, we can get back in this thing and that's exactly what I am going to tell our guys tonight."
Freshman golfer Frankie Capan III paced the Tide on Monday's 18 holes, finishing with a 1-over par 72 on the par 71, 7,253-yard University of Georgia Golf Course. The North Oaks, Minn., native finished the day with three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey, and will enter second round action in a tie for 12th-place overall.
Sophomore Wilson Furr finished with a 3-over par 74, while sophomore Jake DeZoort was at 4-over 75 on the day. The duo will enter the second round in a tie for 32nd and 42nd place overall, respectively. Rounding out the Crimson Tide golfers is freshman Prescott Butler (81) and junior Josh Sedeno (83).
Tournament host and 16th-ranked Georgia was the only squad in the 13-team field to finish at even par (284) and will enter the second round of play with a two-shot lead over No. 4 Vanderbilt (286). Duke (289), ranked No. 9 nationally, is in third, while No. 33 Tennessee (290) and Memphis (292) round out the top five.
The top five teams after 54 holes of play, as well as the low individual not on an advancing team, will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Blessings Golf Club, in Fayetteville, Ark. on May 24-29.
Alabama will tee of second round action at 8:55 a.m. ET (7:55 a.m. CT) off Hole No. 10 and will be paired alongside Memphis and Kentucky.
