The Crimson Tide’s Second Varsity 8+ becomes the program’s second boat to receive the honor
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama rowing's Second Varsity 8+ has been recognized as this week's Big 12 Boat of the Week, it was announced Thursday morning by the conference.
It is the second-straight Big 12 weekly honor for the Crimson Tide. Last week, the First Varsity 8+ received the accolade, becoming the first crew in Alabama history to be named Boat of the Week since joining the conference as an affiliate member in 2015.
"The 2V8+ has started the season strong," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "It's an honor to be recognized by the Big 12 for their hard work."
This week's award-winning 2V8+ crew consists of junior Elle Anderson (coxswain), sophomore Shannon Conlin (stroke), junior Samantha Gafford (7), senior Laura Egeland (6), senior Makena Clark (5), senior Rachel Sowell (4), junior Sarah Giuliani (3), junior Arielle Schafer (2) and sophomore Ilaria Earl (bow).
The crew earned the award for their performance against Jacksonville and Creighton last weekend in Tuscaloosa. For the fourth time this season and for the third consecutive week, then-No. 17 Alabama swept its opponents, winning all of its races against both teams. The 2V8+ highlighted the day by posting a time of 6:34.8 in the standard 2-000-meter race, 25 seconds ahead of the other two crews. The time was also the largest winning margin of any Tide crew of the day.
"It is such an honor to be named Big 12 Boat of the Week, especially after our 1V8+ was honored the week before," Schafer said. "We push each other every day in practice and to see our program be recognized for all the hard work we are putting in, is such an amazing feeling. I'm so proud of my boat and my team."
Alabama returns to the water this weekend, as it heads to Sarasota, Fla., for the Sunshine State Invitational, April 5-6.
