The Crimson Tide dropped the doubles point before winning four-straight singles matches
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 35th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team picked the 4-1 win against Missouri on Andie Daniell's Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With the victory the Crimson Tide (18-10, 6-7 SEC) has won four of its last five matches after besting the Tigers (14-14, 0-13 SEC).
"What a senior day for Andie (Daniell)," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "I was really proud of our fight today. We did not go away, obviously we're not playing the kind of doubles we want to play but we just have to be more aggressive and commanding. Nonetheless, to respond in singles and win five first sets, it was a tremendous response to losing the doubles point. I think we are playing with a lot of momentum and confidence. "
To begin the afternoon Mizzou took the doubles match on court two. The Tide answered back with Daniell and sophomore Moka Ito defeating Wright/Fukutoku on court one, 6-3. In the last match on court five it came down to a tiebreaker and the Tigers coming out on top 7-3 in the tiebreak to take the 1-0 edge.
No. 47 Daniell won her seventh consecutive singles match after besting No. 106 Mackenzy Middlebrook, 6-2, 6-1, to tie the match up at 1-1. The victory marked the 85th of Daniell's career which moved her up to No. 9 all-time in Alabama history.
Ito gave the Crimson Tide the lead as she breezed past Serena Nash, 6-3, 6-2, on court two. Alabama continued to put the pressure on Mizzou after junior Luca Fabian bested Vivien Abraham on court five, 6-2, 6-4, to make it 3-1. The Tide clinched the match at 4-1 when junior Ann Selim dominated the final two sets on her way to the 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, victory over Marta Oliveria on court six.
The 18 wins and six conference victories for the Tide in 2019 are the most for UA since the 2015 season.
Next up, Alabama will travel to College Station, Texas for the 2019 SEC Women's Tennis Championships on April 17-21. The Crimson Tide earned a No. 8 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 9 seed LSU in the second round on Thursday, April 18 at 2 p.m. CT.
