Crimson Tide finishes tournament play with a 2-1 record in match play
ATHENS, Ga. – The Alabama women's golf team defeated Iowa in the final round of match play at the 2019 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Saturday. Competing in the event's Black Bracket, the Crimson Tide also defeated Daytona State on Friday morning before falling to Denver during the afternoon as a part of UA's 2-1 mark in match play action.
"I am starting to see a lot of good things," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We've seen some big improvements in a couple players and seeing shots that we're hitting now that we weren't able to hit earlier in the year. It's improving generally and each one of the girls are building more confidence. Sometimes you get that even if it's a losing effort. All in all, if we could of saved four shots during stroke play, we would have been playing in the other bracket which would have been nice. We've got to find a way to save those shots and carry that forward into next week's SEC Championships."
The Crimson Tide was led by junior Kenzie Wright and sophomore Angelica Moresco, who both finished with unbeaten records during the match play portion (3-0). The duo helped lead Alabama to a 3-2 victory over Iowa in Saturday's lone match. During Friday's competition, the duo played key roles in the Tide's 4-1 victory over Daytona State to open match play and collected the only two points for UA in a narrow 3-2 defeat to Denver to close the day.
Wright continues to impress in head-to-head competition, improving to 5-0 on the year with her three victories in the tournament. The Frisco, Texas, native defeated Iowa's Dana Lerner, 4-and-3 to win her fifth consecutive match of the season. During Friday's contests, she began with a resounding 6-and-5 victory over Daytona State's Alison Crenshaw and followed that with a narrow 1-up win against Camille Enright of Denver.
Moresco has now won four of her five match play contests this season. She opened with a 2-up victory over Jessica Bailey of Daytona State, followed by an impressive 6-and-5 victory over Trussy Li of Denver. On Saturday, the Caldogno, Italy, native continued her stellar performance with a 6-and-5 win against Iowa's Kristin Glesne
Junior Jiwon Jeon improved to 3-2 in match play contests this season with a resounding 7-and-6 win over Shawn Rennegarbe of Iowa on Saturday. Jeon, who faced off against her former school before coming to the Capstone when UA took on Daytona State in Friday's first match, captured a 2-up triumph over the Falcons' Hollie Musk before falling to the Pioneers' Mary Weinstein, 1-up.
Junior Anna Reid finished 1-2 at the Liz Murphey with her long win coming with a 2-and-1 victory over Daytona State's Sadie Chlapowski. However, she fell to Iowa's Brett Permann on Saturday, 3-and-2, and Denver's Alyson Bean on Friday afternoon, 4-and-2. Freshman Mary Mac Trammell had narrow defeats in all three of her matches, falling to Daytona State's Casey Sommer, 2-up, Denver's Sophie Newlove, 1-up and Iowa's Manuela Lizarazu, 3-up.
Alabama earned a spot on the Black Bracket of the tournament after finishing stroke play in 11th overall with a single-round total of 306.
The Crimson Tide will begin postseason play next week when it competes at the 2019 SEC Women's Golf Championships, which will be held at the Greystone Golf and Country Club on April 17-21. Admission throughout the event will be free to the public.
