The Crimson Tide’s First Varsity 8+ wins the award for the second time this season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – For the third-straight week, 19th-Alabama rowing has been awarded the Big 12 Boat of the Week, it was announced Thursday morning by the conference. It is the second time this season that the Tide's First Varsity 8+ crew has been voted Boat of the Week by the league's coaches.
Alabama's three-consecutive weekly honors is tied for the longest such streak in Big 12 Rowing history. The last team to win three-consecutive weekly awards was Texas in 2017.
"We are honored to be recognized by the coaches in our conference for our success at the Sunshine State Invitational," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "There were a lot of strong performances by conference crews this past weekend so to be selected this week is flattering."
The award-winning crew consists of junior Sydney Boles (coxswain), sophomore Cori Guay (stroke), senior Tressa Vitus (7), sophomore Jorja MacRae (6), junior Carley McCoin (5), senior Raien Emery (4), sophomore Darcy Jennings (3), junior Peyton Cowell (2) and junior Rebekah Stewart (bow).
The crew earned the award for their dominant performance in the Sunshine State Invitational last weekend in Sarasota, Fla. Alabama entered the event as the No. 1 overall seed and successfully placed a crew in each possible Grand Final, led by the Tide's 1V8+.
In the final race of Friday's heat session, the 1V8+ became the fourth Alabama crew to advance to Saturday's Grand Final, winning its heat with a 6:31.50 finish. On Saturday, they became the first of four Alabama boats to win gold in their respective event, finishing in 6:30.20.
"I'm really proud of how hard my boat has continued to work," Boles said. "Racing in Sarasota was not easy, but they managed to race beautifully. I'm looking forward to continuing our season and trying to continue the success."
Alabama returns to the water next weekend, April 19-20, as it heads to Clemson, S.C. for the Clemson Invitational.
