The Crimson Tide faces off against the Tigers for the second week in a row, competing in the fifth-annual Elevate the Stage
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After closing out its home schedule last weekend, the Alabama gymnastics team isn't going too far for its next meet. The Crimson Tide will travel an hour up the road to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the Auburn Tigers in the fifth-annual Elevate the Stage meet.
Tickets for the meet, which gets underway at 7 p.m. CT, can be purchased online at ElevateTheStage.com or at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center (BJCC) box office.
On Saturday, all four apparatus will be competed on a raised platform, known as a podium in gymnastics circles. In addition to spotlighting the competitors, it also gives the equipment a little extra bounce. It is the same setup that the gymnasts will see at both the SEC and NCAA Championships.
"I think this meet is great in so many ways," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "The gymnasts are showcased and are the center of attention. The setup is the same one we'll have at the SEC and NCAA Championships, so to get that experience now is very helpful. I also think it's a wonderful environment for the fans in the stands and the little girls who want to be Alabama gymnasts."
In preparation for the second of two regular-season Alabama-Auburn matchups in 2019, both the Tide and Tigers went through a practice day Friday afternoon in Birmingham to adjust to the equipment. Alabama is 4-0 in Elevate meets, including a 197.300-196.900 victory over Auburn last year in the only meet in the series to be held in Huntsville, Ala.
The two teams also faced off last Friday Tuscaloosa, with the Tide coming away with a 196.700-196.400 win over the Tigers.
"Going into Saturday, we're going to have the same mentality that we did last Friday," sophomore Kylie Dickson said. "Go in, do our job, do what we do every day in the gym and compete with all the heart and passion that we have for this sport."
