AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Justine Macfarlane scored in the 100 breaststroke at the Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Friday night, putting the Crimson Tide on the scoreboard.
"I'm really proud of myself, making it back two years in a row," Macfarlane said. "I'm happy to have scored some points for the team."
MacFarlane posted a career-best 54.54 in the preliminaries, shaving a tenth of a second off her previous best time and making it into finals. She held her spot in finals, finishing seventh in the B final and 15th overall. It marked the second year in a row that Macfarlane has scored in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships.
"I was pleased for Justine, to put up a best time as a senior and make it back to the B final," UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. "She's really brought it together the last couple of years and it's good to see her be able to finish out this way."
In other prelims action on Friday, freshman Rhyan White took 33rd place in the 100 backstroke after clocking a 52.69, while sophomore Flora Molnar was 58th in the 100 butterfly with a prelims swim of 53.94. In the 200 medley relay, White, Macfarlane, Molnar and freshman Kalia Antoniou touched the wall with a 1:38.06 to take 25th place.
Alabama closes the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
"Tomorrow has the potential to be our best day," Pursley said. "Hopefully they'll make it the best day of the meet for us."
Freshman Kensey McMahon is seeded 13th in the 1,650 freestyle. Molnar is slated to swim the 100 freestyle, while Macfarlane and White will swim the 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke, respectively. The Tide will also compete in the 400 freestyle relay.
"It's going to be my last event as a swimmer," Macfarlane said of her 200 breaststroke race. I'm just going to go out and have fun, see what happens."
