Baseball and Softball on a Roll
Our baseball and softball teams stand at a combined 42-2 as we reach the midway point of March. Baseball has now won its last 12 games, outscoring opponents 86-23, while softball is off to its second-best start in program history at 26-0 and just one win away from tying the program record for best start.
Men's Basketball Tips off at SEC Tournament Tonight
Our men's basketball team begins postseason play tonight in Nashville at the SEC Tournament, taking on Ole Miss at 6 p.m. CT. This is the second meeting between the two squads this year, with the first going in our favor by a score of 74-53. If you're in the area, we'd love to have as many fans as possible join us in Bridgestone Arena tonight to support the team. You can also catch the game live on the SEC Network.
Great Indoor Track & Field Season Ends in NCAA Top-10 Finishes
Our track & field teams ended the indoor season just up the road at the Birmingham CrossPlex with both the men and the women earning top-10 finishes at last weekend's NCAA Championships. The women's team took seventh after getting top-three finishes from senior Portious Warren in the shot put and sophomore Tamara Clark in the 200 meters. The men finished eighth, paced by junior Shelby McEwen's win in the high jump (more on that later) and senior Keitavious Walter's third-place finish in the 200 meters. Overall, head coach Dan Waters' squads finished the season strong, with both the men and women earning top-10 national finishes at the indoor championships in the same year for just the second time in our history, with the first time coming in 2017.
Shelby McEwen Wins the NCAA High Jump Title
As I mentioned above, Shelby McEwen keyed a top-10 finish at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships for our men's team in Birmingham last weekend by winning the national title in the high jump. Shelby won the title when he jumped 7-6 (2.29 meters) on his third and final attempt. With the win, he becomes the first from the Alabama men's team to win an NCAA indoor high jump title, and just the second in our history to win an NCAA high jump championship, following Jeff Woodard's 1980 outdoor title. Shelby's championship is the 27th NCAA title for the Tide men and the 13th indoor title. Shelby is a great representative of our program and the heights Alabama Athletics strives for day in and day out.
