The Crimson Tide sets to make its first of three trips of the season to Oak Ridge, Tenn.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama rowing will make its first road trip of the spring this weekend, heading to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Cardinal Invitational. The trip will also mark the first of three trips to Oak Ridge for the Crimson Tide this season.
"We have had a great week of selection and training," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "This weekend we are looking to see all crews show improvement over their first race."
Alabama is one of 11 schools competing in the invite, four of which finished in the top-20 of last season's CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll. The field will consist of No. 5 Virginia, No. 8 Yale, No. 16 Wisconsin, No. 20 Louisville, Alabama, Clemson, Indiana, Miami (FL), Minnesota, Notre Dame and Tulsa.
"The crews we are racing this weekend have all demonstrated they are capable of competing at a high level and have all done something that we have yet to do – compete at the NCAA Championship," Putyrae said. "It is a great opportunity to see where we are relative to teams that all expect to be racing in the postseason."
The Tide will open competition Saturday morning against the Cardinals and the Fighting Irish. The First Varsity 8+ crews will race at 10:32 a.m. CT, followed by the First Varsity 4+ crews (10:40 a.m. CT), Third Varsity 8+/Novice 8+ crews (10:48 a.m. CT) and the Second Varsity 8+ crews (10:56 a.m. CT). The Second Varsity 4+ crews will wrap up the morning session at 11:04 a.m. CT.
After a quick break, Alabama will return to the water at 2 p.m. CT against Virginia and Yale. The teams will follow the same race schedule from the morning, with the 2V4+ crews closing out the flight at 2:52 p.m. CT.
The Tide will wrap up competition at the Cardinal Invite Sunday morning at 9:44 a.m. CT against the Clemson Tigers and Indiana Hoosiers. The teams will follow a similar racing schedule, with the 2V4+ crews closing out the flight at 10:16 a.m. CT.
"The objective is to get better every week and every race, which can be a challenging task," Putyrae said. "We'll see how we are progressing Saturday and Sunday."
