Smith named Alabama’s representative on this year’s Community Service Team, ranks among team leaders in hours served in the community
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama sophomore forward Galin Smith was named to the Southeastern Conference's Community Service Team for men's basketball, the league office announced on Monday. Smith is Alabama's representative on the 14-man team that honors players' exemplary service to their communities.
The Clinton, Miss., native has been a pillar to both the University of Alabama and city of Tuscaloosa communities since his arrival on campus in 2017 and is one of the team leaders in total hours served in the community. Most notably, Smith has been a fixture at the Alberta Unity Project, which is spearheaded by the University of Alabama athletics department. While there, he assisted in rebuilding projects and helped mentor young children in the community. He has also participated in the Alberta City Fall Festival, donating his time to volunteer at the event. Additionally, he volunteered his free time at the College Hill Baptist Church Fall Festival.
Smith is also actively involved in campus events where he was a part of the Crimson Kickoff Mixer – a welcome event spearheaded by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) which is put on for incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes. The 6-9 forward has participated in the past in campus events put on by SAAC such as Project Angel Tree and Halloween Extravaganza, among other projects.
On the court, Smith is one of the top reserves on the team, having played in 27 contests for the Tide this season, making seven starts. He is averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while averaging 11.7 minutes a contest. His 53.4 percent (39-of-73) shooting from the field ranks second-best on the team.
This marks the 21st year for the SEC Community Service Team for men's basketball. All 21 league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004. The team honors student-athletes beyond the field for their on-going efforts in the community. The SEC began this concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994.
Smith and the Crimson Tide earned the No. 10 seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament and will face off against No. 7 seed Ole Miss on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
