Saturday’s race will be the first of two spring regattas on the Black Warrior River
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a three-month break from competition, Alabama rowing returns to the water on Saturday to kick off its spring season against Eastern Michigan at 9 a.m. CT.
"In our first race of the season, we are looking to see how well the athletes execute the things we have been working on in practice," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We want to see what kind of speed we have as a team and determine what adjustments we need to make going forward."
The Crimson Tide and the Eagles will start things off at 9 a.m. CT with three spring-course-length 2,000-meter races, followed by four 1,000-meter pieces. A First Varsity 8+/Second Varsity 8+ race will open the competition, followed by a Third Varsity 8+ and a First Varsity 4+/Second Varsity 4+ segment to close out the 2k session.
Starting at 9:45 a.m. CT, the 1,000-meter pieces will begin with three crews from each school rolling out in the Varsity 8+ race. Two Alabama crews from each school will follow that in the Varsity 4+ race. The teams will follow that same pattern for the final two 1k pieces, ending by approximately 10:30 a.m. CT.
This weekend is the first of seven spring races for the Crimson Tide before the Big 12 Championships in May. It also marks the first of two home races, with the second being held on March 30 where Alabama will play host to Creighton and Jacksonville. The regatta will also serve as the Tide's Senior Day and its annual Power of Pink event.
Admission for the event, which will be held at the Black Warrior River at Manderson Landing, is free for all fans.
