In addition to honoring the careers of the Crimson Tide’s three seniors, Alabama will also celebrate Big Al’s birthday as well as Academic Achievement Night
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – This Friday night in Coleman Coliseum promises to be a busy one. The Crimson Tide gymnastics team is honoring the careers of its three seniors, celebrating Big Al's birthday as well as Academic Achievement Night, and of course at the center of it all, No. 8 Alabama faces off against No. 12 Auburn.
"There's so much going on this Friday," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "We can't wait to see everyone in Coleman Coliseum and have all our fans be a part of the fun. Alabama vs. Auburn is always a great competition, no matter if it's football or gymnastics or anything else – it's one of the greatest rivalries in the nation."
The meet gets started at 6:30 p.m., while the doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum and online at RollTide.com.
For the Crimson Tide's trio of seniors - Abby Armbrecht, Angelina Giancroce and Ariana Guerra – Friday is their last meet in Coleman Coliseum. The three will be honored prior to the meet with their families and throughout the meet with their Alabama gymnastics family.
"I love our fans and everything they have ever done for us, all the love and the energy and all the support," Giancroce said. "We just want to say thank you to all the Alabama fans out there."
It's fitting that in addition to being Senior Night, Friday will also be Academic Achievement Night in Coleman Coliseum, as all three of this year's seniors are classroom standouts, having earned eight Scholastic All-America honors between them through their first three years on campus. Tuscaloosa city and county as well as Birmingham city elementary school students have received vouchers that can be redeemed for free admission for two.
University of Alabama students will also be able to get in on the fun, with the first 500 through the doors getting a free t-shirt, in addition to having a chance to win in-meet prizes.
The Tide will also be celebrating everyone's favorite pachyderm with Big Al's Birthday Bash, with games and giveaways on the concourse prior to the meet.
Alabama comes into the weekend ranked ninth nationally, with a national qualifying score of 196.735, while the Tigers are 12th, sporting a 196.425 NQS.
The Tide has relied on strong performances throughout its lineup all season. In their last home meet, sophomore Lexi Graber and junior Shea Mahoney both scored career-best 9.95s on the floor exercise to close out the meet, while last weekend, Armbrecht scored a career-best 9.900 on the balance beam at Kentucky. Freshman Emily Gaskins also posted a career-best 39.400 in the all-around at Kentucky. Graber also scored a career-best 9.95 on the vault earlier this season, while Mahoney leads the way on the uneven bars with a season-best 9.95.
