Jones becomes fourth Alabama men’s basketball player to earn Academic All-District honors
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men's basketball sophomore guard/forward Herbert Jones has been named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District 4 First Team, as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Thursday.
With the nod, Jones becomes the fourth different Alabama player to earn first team academic all-district honors, joining Terrance Meade (2003), Levi Randolph (2013, 2014, 2015) and Retin Obasohan (2016). Additionally, he joins Randolph as the only UA men's basketball player to receive the recognition as a sophomore.
Jones is now eligible to become the second player in men's basketball program history to earn Academic All-American accolades (Levi Randolph achieved the feat in 2015). The Academic All-America team will be announced in mid-March.
A native of Greensboro, Ala., Jones is an accounting major who maintains a 3.51 Grade Point Average, including a perfect 4.0 GPA as a freshman in the No. 9-ranked Culverhouse School of Business. His academic accolades include President's List (4.0 GPA), Dean's List (3.5 or better GPA) and SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition.
On the court, the 6-7, 206-pound guard/forward is the team captain this season, despite just being a sophomore. This season alone, Jones has seen action in all 26 games, making 25 starts. He currently leads the team in steals (23) and charges taken (17), ranks second in blocks (15), third in assists (2.0 apg), fourth in rebounds (3.7 rpg) and is fifth in field goals made (57) and attempted (134), while also collecting 6.1 points per contest.
Considered one of the top defensive players in the Southeastern Conference, Jones' 23 charges taken a year ago set a school record and he has now collected 40 total charges throughout his career. He was named the team's Outstanding Defensive Player as a true freshman last season. This past summer, he was one of 25 collegiate players invited to attend the prestigious Nike Skills Academy in Los Angeles.
Jones is joined on the first team with Amidou Bamba (Coastal Carolina), Ruben Guerrer (Samford), Herb McGee (South Alabama) and Jure Span (USC Upstate).
