Nealy Martin brought home first-team honors while Plavin nabbed a place on the third team
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama soccer seniors Nealy Martin and Alex Plavin earned Soccer Academic All-America honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
Martin, who earned first-team honors, will graduate in the spring with a degree in chemical engineering. She was named the Southeastern Conference Soccer Scholar Athletes of the Year and was selected to the 2019 SEC Community Service Team. On the field, she started and played in all 20 matches in 2019, amassing three goals and an assist. The team captain scored the game-winning goal versus Tennessee in double overtime and in the Tide's SEC Tournament Quarterfinal match against Vanderbilt.
Plavin, who brought home third-team recognition, is slated to graduate in December with both her undergraduate and master's degrees in business management, specializing in human resources. As goalkeeper, she earned nine starts this season, registering two shutouts and collecting 29 saves between the posts.
Both women are two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees, carry a cumulative 4.0 GPA, are four-time members of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and have earned both President's List and Dean's List recognition throughout their time at Alabama.
This season marked the third in a row that Alabama has come away with Academic All-America accolades following back-to-back honors by Emma Welch in 2017 and 2018. These latest honors mark the first time two members of the Tide soccer team have earned the honor in the same year since Merel van Dongen and Laura Lee Smith in 2014. Overall, Alabama Athletics leads the NCAA with 100 Academic All-American honors since the 2009-10 academic year.
