Sophomore Jasmine Walker scored 18 points in the loss
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's basketball team came up short on Thursday night at Coleman Coliseum, falling to Auburn, 66-56.
"We can't turn it over 25 times and give up 28 points off those turnovers," head coach Kristy Curry said. "I thought there were a couple interesting categories, we outrebounded them by six and we got three more shots. A lot of things we missed, we missed twelve layups for the game. Those things coupled with not defending and the turnovers we just can't do that, so the margin of error against their experience is really small and you just have to credit them. I thought Janiah McKay and Daisa Alexander with their experience and season, made big plays for them all night long."
The Crimson Tide was led by sophomore Jasmine Walker's 18 points. Senior Shaquera Wade scored 13 points, and sophomore Ariyah Copeland added 12 points and eight rebounds.
After Auburn jumped ahead 6-0, Alabama used a 7-0 run to take a 10-8 lead at the 5:34 mark of the game's opening frame. The Tigers would finish the period on a 9-3 run to take a 17-13 lead after one.
Auburn got off to a hot start in the second quarter and the Tigers would carry a 36-23 advantage into the halftime break.
Both teams exchanged buckets throughout the third before the Tide would score the final four points of the quarter. Auburn held a 49-42 lead after 30 minutes of action.
The Crimson Tide would cut Auburn's lead to just 49-44 with 9:08 to play in the game, but AU would hold on to come away with the 66-56 win.
The Crimson Tide made eight triples in the contest and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds. Alabama also assisted on 14 of its 22 made baskets.
The Tide will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 13, when it travels to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
