The Crimson Tide offense continues to produce, netting five goals on Thursday night
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama soccer team scored two early goals Thursday night, giving the Tide a cushion going into half. Alabama never let off the gas, with three more goals earned in the second half to give the Crimson Tide a 5-1 victory at the Alabama Soccer Complex. This marks the fourth win in a row for Alabama, who has outscored the competition by a combined total of 17-2 over the stretch to improve to 4-2-1 on the season.
"There's so many different weapons on this team. We're not predictable on the attack and if one player is not on, then there's another player who is going to step in and get the job done," head coach Wes Hart explained. He later went on, to share about leading scorer freshman Kat Rogers, "She has great composure in the box. She picks her head up and picks her target without just smacking the ball as hard as she can."
South Alabama, the five-time consecutive Sun Belt champions and number one seed preseason pick for their conference, played a hard fought first half. Alabama continued to pile on the shots until finally breaking through in the 19th minute, when sophomore Taylor Morgan shot the ball bouncing off the cross bar and landing in the lap of sophomore Casey Wertz. This goal marked the first goal of the game, and Wertz's fifth goal of the season.
Not long after, freshman Riley Mattingly and junior Taylor Hubbard found senior Emma Welch across the field in the 23rd minute of the game, resulting in a goal. The Jaguar's lone goal of the game came from freshman Brianna Masicia and was assisted from freshman Morgan Cross, nearly 10 minutes after Alabama's second goal.
The second half started off like the first, but it did not take long for Rogers to warm up as she warded off a South Alabama defender to win a contested ball. From there, Rogers snuck the ball past goalkeeper Justice Stanford in the 66th minute for her first of two goals of the game.
Rogers was not done for the night, as she scored again in the 76th minute thanks to a double assist from fellow freshman teammates Gabby Duca and Mattingly. The Tide's persistent pressure paid off again, when the ball found the net for an own goal in the 84th minute and final goal of the game, courtesy of the Jaguars.
At the end of regulation, Alabama owned a 29-9 advantage in shots and put 15 of its attempts on goal, compared to South Alabama's three. The Tide also enjoyed a 9-1 bolster in corner kicks, with five coming in the first half. Mattingly tallied her first two careers assists, while Ertz and Rogers share the lead in points at 10.
The Tide seeks to continue its winning way on Sunday, hosting Troy at 1 PM. The contest can be seen on SEC Network +, and will be played at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Admission is free for all fans.
