
Edson Ortiz and Patrick Kaukovalta Remain Perfect at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

Kaukovalta defeated his first nationally-ranked opponent of his career in one of his two wins on the day
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Junior Edson Ortiz and sophomore Patrick Kaukovalta are both still undefeated in singles play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in Milwaukee, Wis. Kaukovalta went 2-0 on Friday, while Ortiz won his first match, before his second match was suspended in the third set until tomorrow morning.
After dropping the first set in his first match, No. 15-seeded Kaukovalta came back to defeat Andrew Rogers (Tennessee) in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Kaukovalta returned to the court in the afternoon and faced No. 1-seeded and No. 104-ranked singles player in the country, Logan Smith (USC). The Espoo, Finland native, earned his first career nationally-ranked win by besting Smith, 6-2, 7-5, and is now 6-1 in singles play so far this fall.
Ortiz earned his second win of the tournament against Piotr Smietana (Iowa), 6-1, 6-3, and then took on Jake DeVine (USC) with the match being suspended in the third set. Ortiz dropped the first set, 6-2, before bouncing back to take the second, 6-4.
In doubles, the tandem's match against Shick/Ogden (NC State) was moved to tomorrow.
