The Tide wraps up its non-conference campaign with a win in Chicago
CHICAGO – Alabama soccer finished their non-conference campaign with a 1-0 victory over DePaul Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. Illinois native, Emma Thomson scored the winning goal late in the second half. The Crimson Tide shutout its fourth opponent of the season, advancing (6-3-1), while DePaul falls to (4-3-2).
"Great response from our team after a tough loss on Thursday night," head coach Wes Hart commented. "That was not an easy win. DePaul is a very good team, especially at home. Once again, our depth paid off. We had some very good contributions from players off the bench, including the game winning goal from Emma Thomson. We will certainly enjoy this win for the next few hours and then our focus shifts to Vanderbilt."
The two teams played to a scoreless first half, with both teams dominating offensively and taking the same amount of shot attempts, eight.
The game-deciding sequence came in the 78th minute when hometown heroes senior Abbie Boswell of Woodridge, Ill. sent a cross pass to the right corner where sophomore Emma Thomson of Park Ridge, Ill. was perfectly placed for a header into the net. This marks Thomson's first career goal, and Boswell's fifth assist of the season.
Goalkeeper sophomore Alex Plavin hung tough between the posts denying DePaul on multiple opportunities through the final 10 minutes of regulation. Plavin finished the day with five saves.
When looking at the statistics, the game appeared even despite Alabama dictating the pace in the second half. After 90 minutes of action, the Tide outshot the Blue Demons, 15-13 (8-8 in first half, 7-5 in second half), but Alabama had two more shot attempts on goal at seven. DePaul, however, attempted two more corner kicks, five.
Alabama will look to continue their winning ways on the road Thursday, Sept. 20 at Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. The contest can be seen on SEC Network +.
