Crimson Tide slate highlighted by a pair of tournaments in Birmingham, along with trips to Puerto Rico and Mexico
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men's golf head coach Jay Seawell announced the 2018-19 schedule on Monday, which features five tournaments apiece in both the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019. The Crimson Tide's slate features trips to Mexico and Puerto Rico, along with a pair of local tournaments which will be played in Birmingham – in the fall for the 33rd annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and in the spring for the Shoal Creek Invitational.
The Crimson Tide will play in a total of five events during the fall season – two in September and three in October – which begins on Sept. 7-9 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at the Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga. Alabama has won the event four times, including tying for first with host Georgia Tech a year ago. The Tide will then travel to Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago to compete in the challenging Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 14-16.
October will begin with the annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be held Oct. 8-9 at Old Overton Club in Vestavia, Hills, Ala. Alabama has won the event in nine of the last 12 years, including capturing the title in 2017.
The Tide will then compete at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Atlanta, Ga., on Oct. 19-21. The appearance in the event, which traditionally features one of the strongest fields in college golf, will mark UA's first showing since the spring of 2008.
Alabama will close out the fall season with the prestigious East Lake Cup, which is also held in Atlanta on Oct. 29-31 and will be televised by the Golf Channel. That event will feature the eight semifinalists from the 2018 NCAA Division I men's and women's golf national championships. The teams will compete in a format similar to the NCAA Championships as the teams will compete in one round of stroke play to determine seedings followed by match play competition which will result in the tournament champion.
Starting off the spring campaign, Alabama again returns to the Puerto Rico Classic, held at the Rio Mar Country Club, in Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 17-19. Alabama has won the tournament six times in program history.
Alabama then travels to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, where it will make its debut at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on March 3-5. The Crimson Tide will next look to defend its championship when it competes at the Linger Longer Invitational on March 15-17 in Greensboro, Ga. UA will enter this year's event having won five of the last eight Linger Longer team titles.
Back on this year's schedule is the John Hayt Intercollegiate, which will be held on Jacksonville, Fla., on March 31-April 1. It will mark Alabama's first appearance at the tournament since 2015 and just the second showing since 2011.
The Tide will close out the spring regular season schedule on April 15-16 when it competes at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
Postseason play begins April 24-28 with the SEC Championships held in St. Simons Island, Ga., at the Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course. NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 13-15, while the golf season will conclude May 24-29 at the NCAA Championships, held at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
