The Crimson Tide outshot the Owls 30-6 in its first win of the 2018 season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's soccer team dominated from start to finish in its 6-0 win over Kennesaw State at the Alabama Soccer Stadium on Sunday night. With the victory, the Crimson Tide improves to 1-2-1 on the year, while the Owls drop to 3-1-0.
"The girls came out with the right mindset, played hungry, and aggressive today," head coach Wes Hart explained. "As the shots fell in we became more and more confident, and by scoring that first goal I think it took a lot of pressure off of us. We have some talented young players and for them to go out and prove themselves that they can play at this level, it makes a big impact. As the season goes on and we get ready for SEC play these minutes are valuable for growing as a team."
Alabama came out hot in the first half, scoring its first goal of the game in the ninth minute after strong passing from redshirt freshman Kaley Verpaele and sophomore Taylor Morgan set up senior Kayla Mouton's back-heel shot that found its way past the keeper.
Later in half, a beautiful corner kick from freshman Kat Rogers found its way to sophomore Casey Wertz who out-battled the KSU defense and headed the ball in the back of the net to double the UA lead in the 40th minute. Just two minutes later, Rogers launched a rocket from the 30-yard mark that went top shelf past the Owls' keeper to put the Tide up 3-0 at half.
Alabama kept charging in the second frame as junior Taylor Hubbard used fancy footwork to find Rogers who again sent a missile that went top shelf to push the Tide advantage to 4-0 in the 53rd minute. In the 68th minute, Wertz scored her second goal of the game after senior Abbie Boswell passed the ball inside the box to Wertz for an easy finish on the right side.
Off a corner in the 78th minute, Morgan connected on the final goal of the game after she collected the ball from Rogers within the box and put it away to give Alabama its sixth goal of the contest.
Alabama outshot Kennesaw State, 30-6, and bested the Owls in corner kicks, 10-2.
Rogers finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Wertz had two goals on five shots. In goal, sophomore Alex Plavin grabbed one save and earned her first win of the season in the shutout victory.
Next up, the Tide continues its homestand when it faces off against Virginia Tech on Thursday, August 30 at 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network +.
