Boswell scores lone goal for the Crimson Tide, which outshot the Mean Green 29-14 on the day
DENTON, Texas – The Alabama soccer team closed out its two-game road swing to open the 2018 season with a 1-1 draw at North Texas on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson Tide controlled the run of play throughout regulation and both overtimes, outshooting the Mean Green 29-14 in the match, but was unable to find a game-winner.
"We knew it would not be easy because North Texas is a very good team," Alabama head coach Wes Hart said. "Playing them on less than two days rest in the Texas heat was a challenge, but our team answered the call. We played very well and created a ton of chances, but just couldn't get them to fall. If we continue to play like that, we're going to win a lot of games. Obviously, I'd rather be sitting on two wins right now, but I would not trade this for two easy home wins. There's no doubt that these games are going to help us long term. Both of these opponents were similar to teams we will face in SEC and postseason play."
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, North Texas (1-0-1), the four-time defending Conference USA champions, was able to collect the game's first goal at the 67:50 mark when Taylor Torres scored off a throw in to put her team up 1-0.
Alabama (0-1-1) responded just over 10 minutes later as sophomore Chloe Maize found senior Abbie Boswell in the top corner of the 18-yard box. With a defender draped on her, Boswell was able to spin and whip a shot that bent into the far upper-90 to even the score at 1-1 at the 78:33 mark.
The Tide dominated the overtime, outshooting the Mean Green 6-0 over the two extra periods with four of those shots coming on frame. The best scoring chance came in the second overtime with just over seven minutes remaining as junior Taylor Hubbard received a pass and found herself wide open in front of the net. However, her shot was saved by North Texas goalkeeper Kelsey Brann. The rebound went right to the feet of senior Emma Welch, but Brann managed to make the save on the goal line to keep the game even.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kaylee Hammer, making her first career start, had six saves on the afternoon for UA. Brann finished with nine stops, including four in the overtime periods for North Texas.
Alabama will return home when it begins a seven-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 24, against Florida Golf Coast at 7 p.m. CT in the home opener. The Tide will then take on Kennesaw State on Sunday at 6 p.m. CT. Admission to all home games is free to students and fans.
