From US Rowing to Nike, Alabama rowers are interning throughout the country this summer
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama rowers Arielle Schafer and Virginia Dodenhoff are interning at US Rowing and Nike this summer. We caught up with each of them to discuss their position and what they're doing.
Schafer // US Rowing:
"This summer, I was given the opportunity to be a communications intern for the United States Rowing Association (US Rowing). Since being at US Rowing, I have been able to interview rowers from the youth to the national level, create video packages and write press releases and recaps. More recently, I have been doing more writing because that's my weakest area! We just got back from Sacramento, Calif., where the Youth National Championships were and it was such a neat experience to travel and work the event instead of just competing in it. Being more behind-the-scenes at these regattas has definitely given me more of an appreciation for the sport and it's making me a little eager to get back into the boat this fall! This week I am covering two Masters level regattas and creating a 60-second spotlight package on two National Team members."
Check out US Rowing for all of Schafer's articles and video packages. Her favorite one so far was the package she did on a set of triplets all in the same boat.
"It has been super fun and a great learning experience so far!!"
Dodenhoff // Nike:
"This summer I have been in Portland, Ore., interning with Nike's North America Communications team. It's so beautiful here – I get to hike and kayak all the time. My team is awesome and I've gotten to work on a lot of cool projects. I've loved learning how Nike works with the media."
This past weekend, Dodenhoff attended The Opening Finals in Dallas, Texas, where she got to interact with the media, the athletes and all the other Nike football departments.
"I loved watching the media – they got to have a true Nike experience. They learned all about Nike football, from the cleats to the athletes that play in them. I loved seeing all the behind-the-scenes madness of putting on a huge event. I've learned so much and I can't wait to see what next month has in store!"
