TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama head rowing coach Glenn Putyrae officially announced the additions of Gracie Barbara and Madison Keaty to the Crimson Tide coaching staff on Tuesday afternoon. Both Barbara and Keaty will serve as assistant coaches for the Tide, along with James Mulcahy who will be entering his third season at Alabama.
"I am looking forward to getting this staff together and working with the Tide student-athletes to grow as a program," Putyrae said. "All of us have a passion for rowing that I believe will lead this team to success."
A native of Alexandria, Va., Barbara spent two seasons as Louisville's graduate assistant coach (2016-18). She started rowing for T.C. Williams where she was team captain for two years. For five consecutive years, Barbara medaled at the Virginia State Championships, winning silver at the Stotesbury Cup and gold at the Scholastic Nationals. She went on to row for Indiana University for four years and was an instrumental factor for the team as it qualified for the NCAA championships for the first time in program history in 2014, finishing 11th overall. Upon graduating, Barbara returned to T.C. Williams, coaching the women's 2V to a silver at Stotesbury and a bronze at the Scholastic Nationals in 2016.
Keaty joins the staff after having spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Gonzaga with Putyrae. In her first two seasons, the Zags saw two straight WCC championships and advanced to the NCAA championships both seasons. She served as a graduate assistant at Ithaca (N.Y.) College in 2014-15 and co-novice coach in 2015-16, seeing the program reach several top finishes. In the spring of 2015, Keaty coached the Varsity Lightweight 4+ to a third-place finish at the ECAC championships in the Open 4+ and led a pair of Varsity 4+'s to a first-place finish in the Open 4+ at the NIRC championship. From 2010-14, she rowed as a member of Gonzaga and served as team captain during the 2013-14 campaign. In 2013, Keaty was named West Coast Conference Rower of the Year as a junior, helping the Zags to a WCC title and a berth in the NCAA championships where they finished 19th overall.
Mulcahy enters his third season as assistant coach for the Crimson Tide. His primary duties include working with the Varsity crews and serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. Prior to Alabama, Mulcahy coached at the Argonaut Rowing Club, where he had 28 athletes earn medals at the 2015 Provincial Championships, six at the 2015 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and four at the 2015 Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships. He also coached Team Canada at both the 2015 and 2016 CanAmMex Regatta. Mulcahy previously served as the varsity women's rowing coach at the University of Toronto and as the head coach of the Saskatoon Rowing Club. He was a competitive rower from 2000-08, lettering for four years at Columbia (2005-08) and served as captain of the Columbia University Varsity Heavyweight Crew during his final three years.
