Point guard led Cleveland in scoring, assists, field goals made and field goals attempted
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Former Alabama standout Collin Sexton lived up to the hype surrounding his eighth overall selection by the Cleveland Cavaliers at the 2018 NBA Draft in June. Sexton, who was the third-highest Crimson Tide NBA draftee in program history, ended the summer by leading the Cavs in scoring, assists and field goals made and attempted during the 2018 Las Vegas NBA Summer League.
With only the championship game remaining, the Mableton, Ga., native leads the Las Vegas Summer League in field goals made (48) and attempted (112). He ranks seventh in points per game average (minimum of four games played in summer league action), while also contributing 3.6 rebounds and a team-leading 3.4 assists per game.
Sexton collected four games of 20 or more points, highlighted by a 27-point performance in the Cavs' double overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the summer league tournament semifinals Monday night. In that contest, Sexton forced both extra periods when he sank a game-tying three-pointer near the end of regulation and followed that with the game-tying free throw at the end of the first overtime.
In his lone season with the Tide, Sexton became the 19th different player in program history, and first since 2008 (Richard Hendrix), to earn All-America accolades. He was the only UA rookie to earn a spot on an Associated Press All-America team (first, second, third or honorable mention) in program history.
Additionally, he was named the AP Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-SEC this past season, while the league's coaches voted him as the SEC Freshman of the Year and to the All-Freshman squad and All-SEC second team.
Sexton became the 15th Alabama player to be chosen in the first round and is the fourth top-10 selection in program history, joining Antonio McDyess (No. 2 overall in 1995), Derrick McKey (No. 9 overall in 1987) and Leon Douglas (No. 4 overall in 1976).
