
Alabama Men’s Tennis’ Mazen Osama and Edson Ortiz Named to the All-SEC Team

Junior Mazen Osama was named First Team All-SEC, while sophomore Edson Ortiz earned Second Team All-SEC honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Mazen Osama and sophomore Edson Ortiz continue to pile on the accolades with Osama being named First Team All-SEC, while Ortiz earned Second Team All-SEC honors, the conference office announced on Thursday.
Osama became the first All-American for Alabama men's tennis since 2001 after qualifying as a Top-16 national seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament yesterday. Osama has a 15-7 record, including nine wins over national-ranked foes. The Cairo, Egypt native, has won four-straight matches against Top 125-opponents, including all three he faced in last week's SEC Tournament. He also has won seven of his last 10 matches.
Ortiz is second on the team with a 16-6 record in the dual match season, and a 22-10 record overall. The Chihuahua, Mexico native, has been a leader on and off the court, as he was named to the SEC Community Service Team last week.
Osama and Ortiz also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Tournament. Both tournaments will be held from May 23-28 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The pair is 16-7 on the season with two wins over nationally-ranked foes.
Alabama also improved in the latest team rankings, moving up to No. 42 and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
Alabama men's tennis take on No. 23 Tulane in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 11 at 1 p.m. CT in Tallahassee, Fla. The winner will take either No. 11 Florida State or Alabama State on Saturday, May 12 at 3 p.m. CT.
