
NCAA Announces Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Tournament Draws

Junior Mazen Osama and sophomore Edson Ortiz are featured in the tournaments
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Mazen Osama will take on No. 51 Aswin Lizen from Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Tuesday, May 23 at 10:30 a.m. CT. Osama currently ranks as the No. 10 singles player in the country and earned a national seed in the tournament.
Osama and partner sophomore Edson Ortiz earned a bid in the NCAA Doubles Tournament and will take on No. 25 Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce of Ohio State on Thursday, May 24 with the time to be announced. Osama and Ortiz are 16-8 on the season in the No. 1 position for the Tide.
In his second appearance in the singles tournament, Osama is 15-7 on the year, with nine wins over nationally-ranked opponents in the No. 1 spot. The Cairo, Egypt native, is the first Alabama men's tennis All-American since 2001 and moved up to a career-best No. 10 in the May 3 Oracle/ITA Singles Rankings.
Osama's opponent, Lizen had the highest win tally for the Cavaliers this season, posting a 30-6 record in singles. He ranked as high as No. 10 in singles this spring, and went 12-1 in singles in the fall and opened the spring winning his first eight singles matches to start the year, 20-1. Lizen was 18-5 this spring in singles, including posting a 9-3 record in conference matches. This is his first appearance in the singles tournament.
The winner of the match will face either Trevor Johnson of TCU or Daniel Valent of Vanderbilt in the second round on Thursday, May 24.
In doubles, No. 26 Osama/Ortiz will take on Torpegaard/Joyce who have led Ohio State to the NCAA Team Tournament Championship against No. 1 Wake Forest. The OSU pair are 8-3 on the season including compiling a 4-2 record against nationally-ranked foes.
