Crimson Tide men in fourth place in team chase heading into meet’s final day on Sunday
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Portious Warren's school record in the women's shot put highlighted Saturday's events for the Alabama track & field teams at the 2018 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships at the University of Tennessee's Tom Black Track.
Warren set a school record in the shot put with an effort of 56-11 ¼ (17.35m) on her final attempt of the competition. Warren has now set both the indoor and outdoor UA records in the event in her first year with the Tide. The Matura, Trinidad & Tobago native has recorded seven of the top-10 outdoor shot put measurements in school history this season.
"Portious is such competitor," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said. "I knew when the marks started to get a little longer in the later throws that she was going have a good finish. We knew she had that in her. She's been throwing that distance in practice so I'm really happy for her. That's a big-time mark."
The finish was the second silver medal for the Crimson Tide women at this year's SEC meet. Freshman McKenzie Yanek was the runner-up in the 10,000 meters on Friday evening.
In men's finals on Saturday, junior Kord Ferguson finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 62-10 ¾ (19.17m). The mark ranks No. 6 all-time at Alabama and gives the Ottawa, Kan., native five of the top-10 efforts in school history.
In the women's long jump final, junior Kiara Williams finished seventh with a personal and UA season best leap of 20-10 (6.36m). Senior Filippa Fotopoulou finished eighth at 20-4 ¼ (6.20m).
With Saturday's final event results, the Alabama men are in fourth place in the team race with 33 points. Arkansas leads with 39, followed by Texas A&M (25), Florida (34), UA and Georgia (30) to round out the top five.
The Alabama women are tied for fifth with Georgia at 22 points. Ole Miss is first with 50 points. Texas A&M (42), Florida (37) and Tennessee (25) round out the top five.
The Alabama men advanced at least one runner in every track preliminary on Saturday and will now have finalists in eight of 10 running events and all four field events on Sunday.
Senior Ruebin Walters easily advanced to the final of the 110-meter hurdles with a wind-aided prelim-best time of 13.28. Junior Keitavious Walter advanced to the final in the 100 meters with a heat-winning time of 10.24. Senior Connor Ferrentino advanced to Sunday's final in the 1,500 meters on time at 3:50.58. Freshman Champion Allison advanced to the final in the 400-meters with a heat-winning – and UA season-best – time of 46.07.
In women's preliminary action, Alabama advance runners to the 100-meter and 1,500-meter finals on Sunday. Junior Nicole Gardner finished 10th in the prelims of the 1,500 meters in 4:28.05 to advance while freshman Tamara Clark finished sixth in the prelims of the 100 meters to move on with a personal best time of 11.23 that equals the ninth-fastest time in school history.
"We're still hitting on all cylinder and scoring in the places where we're supposed to be scoring," Waters added. "It's going to come down to who has the best last day. It looks like a four team race on the men's side and we're one of the four. Hopefully our guys are motivated to bring home another championship."
Sunday's finals will get underway for the Tide at 1:30 p.m. CT with the Stacey Destin in the women's high jump. Running event finals will start at 5:02 p.m. CT with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
