AUSTIN, Texas – Alabama rowing battled hard Saturday at the Longhorn Invitational, taking home four fourth-place finishes, a trio of third-place finishes and a pair of first-and-second-place finishes in each crew's respective B Final in Austin, Texas.
The Crimson Tide was one of eight teams competing in Austin along with No. 3 Texas, No. 7 Iowa, No. 9 Virginia, No. 18 Oklahoma, Central Florida, Miami (Fla.) and Oregon State.
"Props to our 1V4+ and 3V8+ for their racing today and for winning their respective finals," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "All crews improved from early morning races to the late morning races."
Alabama started session one with three fourth-place finishes. The Tide's 2V4+ crew (7:40.450) competed against three top-10 teams before advancing to the B Finals. The Tide's 1V4+ (7:26.786) highlighted the session, edging out the seventh-ranked Hawkeyes to grab second and advance to the B Finals. Alabama's 3V8+ (7:06.409) and Novice 8+ (7:16.135) wrapped up the session, placing second in each of their respective heats.
The Tide started to heat up in the second session, posting a pair of first-and-second-place finishes in each crew's respective B Final. Alabama's 3V8+ crew (7:45.318) won its B Final, with the Novice 8+ right behind them in second place with a 7:54.531 finish. Alabama followed with another first-place finish in the 1V4+ B Final, crossing the line in 8:04.505. The Tide's 2V8+ (7:13.261) and 1V8+ (7:28.811) crews rounded out the day finishing third and fourth, respectively.
"There are several key things we need to improve between now and conference championships if we're going to be successful there," Davis said.
The Crimson Tide will return to action in two weeks, traveling to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Big 12 Championships, May 12-13.
