Jacqueline Pelletier defeats Tennessee’s Ariadna Riley in three sets at No. 3

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Alabama women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 12 seed Tennessee, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2018 Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.

After snatching the doubles point, the Volunteers won three out of the first four singles matches to move on to the second round of the tournament.

In doubles play, UT's Schuck/Hammond defeated senior Smith Hinton and sophomore Alba Cortina-Pou, 6-1, at No. 2, while the Vol duo of Profit/Sawyer topped sophomores Luca Fabian and Jacqueline Pelletier, 6-2, at No. 3 to take the 1-0 advantage.

In singles, the Volunteers won the first set on all six courts, but the Tide rallied back and claimed the second set in five out of the six spots to force a third. Despite the resilient effort, Tennessee responded by capturing the first two matches at No. 4 and No. 5 to extend its lead to 3-0. UT's Gabby Shuck defeated Cortina-Pou, 6-3, 6-2, on court five, while Lady Vol Kaitlin Staines topped sophomore Ann Selim, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, on court four to put Tennessee one match away from clinching the contest.

Then, Pelletier halted Tennessee's momentum on court three, thanks to a come-from-behind win, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. However, UT's Johanna Silva propelled the Vols to victory, after defeating freshman Kylie Moulin in a close three-set match, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Alabama ends the season with 15 wins, the most victories since the 2015 season.
