Alabama Women’s Golf Captures Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic Title

Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson tie for individual medalist honors
ATHENS, Ga. – Juniors Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson shared individual medalist honors and as the Alabama women's golf team cruised to its third tournament victory of the season, winning the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the par-72, 6,300-yard University of Georgia Golf Club in Athens, Ga., on Saturday.
Alabama (276-286-287/849) jumped out to a 12-shot lead after two rounds on Friday and finished at 1-under par in Saturday's final round for a 15-under par weekend to take home the team title. Arkansas (290-284-291/865) and Duke (292-288-285/865) shared second place, 16 shots back, at 1-over par. Host Georgia (290-295-286/871) finished fourth at 7-over par. Baylor (289-299-292/880) was fifth at 16-over par.
"We built a lead on Friday that, in hindsight, was insurmountable, "Alabama head coach Mic Potter said following the final round. "When you have quality players, you can build on something like that. Cheyenne got us off to a great start on Friday and Lauren got hot today, which gave us some cushion. It was great to watch the two of them battle down the stretch for the individual title."
Knight (65-71-73/209) and Stephenson (71-69-69/209) finished at 7-under par to tie for individual medalist honors. The tie marks the first time in Alabama women's golf history that two Tide golfers have shared medalist honors at a tournament. Knight and Stephenson join Kathleen Ekey (2009) and Jennifer Kriby (2012) as third and fourth Crimson Tide golfers to win the Liz Murphey.
Sophomore Kristen Gillman (70-71-72/213) tied for sixth at 3-under par. Freshman Angelica Moresco (70-75-73/218) tied for 14th at 2-over par. Senior Lakareber Abe (76-79-79/234) tied for 50th at 18-over par. Senior Nicole Morales (74-75-77/226) played as an individual this weekend and tied for 33rd at 10-over par.
The tournament was the final regular season outing for the Crimson Tide. Alabama will begin postseason competition next week with the Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championships, April 18-22, at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham.
