The Crimson Tide posts seven third-place finishes, wins Petite Final in first day of Lake Natoma Invitational
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Alabama rowing went head-to-head with some of the nation's top boats in day one of the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif., Saturday, posting seven third-place finishes and one fourth-place finish, before ending the day with a win in the 2V4+ Petite Final.
The Crimson Tide was one of eight teams across the country at Lake Natoma including No. 2 Cal, No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 Brown, San Diego, Sacramento State, Notre Dame and Gonzaga.
"Some of our crews made necessary adjustments between morning and afternoon races, some did not," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "We have another opportunity tomorrow morning to incorporate and execute these adjustments."
The Tide kicked off its first round of racing with four consecutive third-place finishes, starting with the First Varsity 4+ (7:26.6). Alabama squared off against No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 Brown and San Diego in the 1V4+, 2V8+ (6:54.3) and 1V8+ (6:50.3), before ending the session with a 7:44.3 finish in the 2V4+ against the Cardinal and Fighting Irish.
"The team raced well against very strong competition this morning," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "That said, there are a couple of things we can improve upon to get more speed from our crews in our afternoon races and we're looking forward to doing so."
The teams returned to the water later in the afternoon, with the Tide picking up where it left off with another third-place finish in the Novice 8/3V8+ against second-ranked Cal, crossing the line at 7:06.2. Alabama would square off against the Cardinal, Fighting Irish and Sacramento State in the next three events, finishing third in both the 1V4+ (7:40.4) and 2V8+ (6:55.5) and fourth in the 1V8+ (6:49.4). The 2V4+ would wrap up Alabama's first day of racing with a win in its 2V4+ Petite Final (7:38.4).
"Special kudos to our 2V4+ for putting together a great race winning the B Final this afternoon," Davis said.
The Crimson Tide will wrap up competition tomorrow morning, starting with a rematch against the No. 2 Golden Bears in the Novice 8/3V8+ at 10 a.m. CT. Alabama will then finish its day by racing Gonzaga, Sacramento State and San Diego in the 1V4+ (10:10 a.m. CT), 2V8+ (10:30 a.m. CT) and 1V8+ (10:50 a.m. CT).
