Crimson Tide sprinters record multiple national top-five times on Friday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Running in the best weather conditions they've seen this year, the Alabama track & field teams turned in a number of season-best performances at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. on Friday afternoon.
For the Tide men, senior Ruebin Walters and junior Keitavious Walter turned in two of top times in the country this season in the 110-meter hurdles and 100 meters, respectively. Walters finished second in the hurdles with a time of 13.31. The time is the second-fastest in school history – and fastest ever run in a collegiate meet by a UA runner – and is currently the second-fastest in the country this season.
In the 100 meters, Walter was the No. 2 collegiate finisher with a UA-season best time of 10.12 that equals the fifth-best time in the NCAA this season. The time also ties for the eighth-fastest in school history.
Other winners for the Crimson Tide men were junior Shelby McEwen in the high jump (7-1 ¾; 2.18m) and freshman Elliott Miller in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:24.53). Both marks are season-bests for Alabama with Miller's being a new personal best.
Freshman Tamara Clark turned in the top women's individual performance of the day, winning the 200 meters in a personal-best 22.57, the third-fastest time in school history. Senior Kaitlin Walker also produced a UA women's top-10 time with a personal-best 58.34 for a collegiate No. 2 finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The time is the eighth-fastest ever run at Alabama and ranks No. 4 in the country this season.
In women's field events, junior Portious Warren was the No. 2 collegiate finisher in the shot put with a mark of 55-5 ¾ (16.88m), which is the No. 3 mark in school history. Senior Britainy Smith won the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 13-3 ½ (4.05m).
In the relays, Clark teamed with fellow freshman Daija Lampkin and sophomores Symone Darius and Takyera Roberson for the top collegiate finish in the 4x100-meter relay in 43.26, the fifth-fastest time in school history. The quartet also posted a season-best 3:34.37 for the No. 2 collegiate finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
"We had a number of good things happen today," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said. "I'm extremely pleased with what we saw from Ruebin Walters, Keitavious Walter, Tamara Clark and Portious Warren. Keitavious' time is one of the best in the country with a legal wind this season. Ruebin just missed breaking his school record and Portious is just the third woman to surpass 55 feet in the shot put at Alabama. Tamara well ran on both relays and still had enough in the tank to run the fourth-best 200-meter time in the country this season. We really moved forward in a lot of areas today. Now we have to build from this."
Alabama will split its squad next weekend, sending a contingent of distance runners to Stanford's Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, Calif., on April 20 while the remainder of the team competes in the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn. April 20-21.
