Alabama Track & Field Turns in Strong Day at Samford Alabama Track Challenge

Jake Spotswood and Kaitlin Walker record top-10 school performances in the pole vault and 400 hurdles
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama track & field teams saw a number of student-athletes make their outdoor debuts on Friday at the Samford Alabama Track Challenge in Birmingham, Ala.
On the track, freshman Tamara Clark led a Tide sweep of the top four spots in the women's 100 meters, crossing the line first in a personal-best time of 11.27. Fellow freshman Daija Lampkin was second at 11.44, which is also a personal best. Sophomore Takyera Roberson finished third at 11.76 and senior Olivia Fotopoulou was fourth in 11.82. In the women's 200 meters, sophomores Katie Funcheon (23.93), Hope Mazi (24.75) and senior Olivia Fotopoulou (24.99) were the top three collegiate finishers with Mazi establishing a new personal best with her time. Senior Kaitlin Walker won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best 59.09, which ranks as the No. 8 time in school history.
On the men's side, senior Ruebin Walters won the 110-meter hurdles in his first outing of the season in a time of 13.51. Freshman Dylan Scott won the 800 meters in 1:54.00 in his first outdoor collegiate race at that distance. In the 200 meters, junior Keitavious Walter (20.91) and sophomore Alize Ford (21.19) finished 1-2 with Ford recording a new personal best. Freshmen Paul Selden (8:57.29) and Nathan Gamble (8:59.38) finished second and third, respectively in their collegiate outdoor debuts in the 3,000 meters.
In the relays, the team of freshmen Lampkin, Clark, sophomore Symone Darius and Roberson won the women's 4x100-meter relay in a season-best 44.10. The women's 4x400-meter relay of Mazi, Darius, Funcheon and junior Jada Jackson finished first in a time of 3:45.46.
The Crimson Tide men's quartet of Ford, Walter, Walters and junior Skyler Bowden won the men's 4x100 in a time of 40.08 in their first outing of the season.
The Alabama women picked up three field event wins as junior Tianah List won the javelin with a throw of 161-7 (49.26), senior Britainy Smith was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault with a UA season-best clearance of 13-1 ½ (4.00m) and freshman Jaimie Robinson won the long jump in her outdoor collegiate debut with a personal-best of 20-2 ¼ (6.15m).
Senior Danielle McConnell finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 191-6 (58.36m). The throw is her second-best of the season. Junior Portious Warren finished third in the discus in her first outing of the season with a throw of 145-2 (44.24m). Junior Holly Julifs finished fourth at 141-3 (43.05m).
In the lone men's field event for the Tide on Friday, freshmen Jake Spotswood and Ryan Lipe finished third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault. Spotswood's clearance equals the 10th-best in school history, giving the Daphne, Ala., native two UA top-10 vaults in the first two outdoor meets of his career.
Alabama will send a contingent of distance runners to the Stanford Invitational, March 30-31, in Palo Alto, Calif. The Tide's next full meet will be the team's lone home outing of the season, the Crimson Tide Invitational presented by Beynon Sports, April 6-7, at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex in Tuscaloosa.
