MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Alabama swimming and diving team opens competition at the 2018 NCAA Men's Championships Thursday at 10 a.m. CT with the prelims of the 200 freestyle relay.
This year's championships are in Minneapolis, Minn., on the University of Minnesota campus and will run through Saturday, March 24. Alabama will also swim the 50 freestyle as well as the 400 medley relay on Thursday.
The Crimson Tide's NCAA championships squad includes nine men, six that are competing in individual events and another three that fill out UA's relay squads.
Four of the eight fastest 50 freestylers in school history are on this year's squad, including junior Robert Howard (2nd) and sophomore Zane Waddell (3rd). The Tide's 400 medley relay – senior Luke Kaliszak, junior Laurent Bams, Waddell and Howard – will also compete on Thursday.
In Thursday's individual events, Howard, Waddell and sophomore Christopher Staka will swim the 50 freestyle. Howard medaled in the 50 freestyle at the SEC championships earlier this season while Waddell earned All-America honors in the event at last year's NCAA Championships.
Finals are slated to get underway at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday.
