COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Alabama women's swimming and diving team scored in two events on its second day at the NCAA Championships Friday night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the Ohio State campus.
The 200 medley relay made up of juniors Katie Kelsoe and Justine Macfarlane along with freshman Flora Molnar and senior Bailey Scott, moved up a spot from prelims and finished 12th in finals with a time of 1:37.51.
In prelims, the Tide took 13th place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.33. The Tide has now finaled in the 200 freestyle and medley relays, marking the first time the UA women have scored in two relays at the NCAA championships since 2005. That was also the last time Alabama scored in the 200 medley relay at nationals.
Earlier in the night, Macfarlane took 16th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.12. She advanced to finals after posting a career-best 59.69 in prelims.
"We got off to a slow start this morning, which was disappointing, but I was proud of the girls for supporting one another and keeping their focus where it needed to be," UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. "They finished up strong with Justine swimming a best time in the prelims in the 100 breaststroke to get back tonight which was good for her. Then the relay getting back and finishing 12th tonight was a good swim for them. We finished on a positive note and we've just got one more day to go to see what we can do."
In other prelims action, senior Mia Nonnenberg posted a 4:13.06 to take 32nd place in the 400 individual medley while freshman Leonie Kullmann was 33rd in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.93. Freshman Flora Molnar took 48th in the 100 butterfly after touching the wall at 54.06.
The Crimson Tide returns to action Saturday in the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 1,650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims get underway at 9 a.m. CT.
