The Crimson Tide opens the 2018 championships Thursday with the 200 freestyle relay
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Alabama swimming and diving team opens competition at the 2018 NCAA Women's Championships Thursday at 9 a.m. CT with the prelims of the 200 freestyle relay.
This year's championships are in Columbus, Ohio on the Ohio State campus and will run through Saturday, March 17. Alabama will also swim the 50 and 500 freestyles as well as the 400 medley relay on Thursday.
The Crimson Tide's NCAA championships squad includes nine swimmers, five that are competing in individual events and another four that fill out UA's relay squads.
"I know the ladies are excited about the opportunities in front of them," UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. "It's what they've been working toward all year long. We try and put the highest priority on the highest level of competition and that's where we are this week."
The four fastest 50 freestylers in school history are on this year's squad, including senior Bailey Scott (1st), freshman Flora Molnar (2nd), senior Lindsay Morrow (3rd) and senior Temarie Tomley (4th). The quartet is slated to open the championships with the 200 freestyle relay. The Tide's 400 medley relay – juniors Katie Kelsoe and Justine Macfarlane, Molnar and freshman Leonie Kullmann – will also compete on Thursday.
In the individual events, Scott and Molnar will swim the 50 freestyle while Kullmann is set to go in the 500 freestyle on Thursday. Scott medaled in the 50 freestyle at the SEC championships earlier this season and earned honorable mention All-America honors last season. Kullmann set the school record in the 500 at the SEC championships.
Finals are slated to get underway at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday.
