TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team will look to remain perfect in the 2018 campaign when it hosts Pepperdine on Friday, Feb. 9 p.m. at 6 p.m. and then a doubleheader against San Diego State at 1 p.m. and Lipscomb at 6 p.m. on Sunday inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Crimson Tide is off to its best start since 2003 after winning its first nine matches to begin the dual match season, while receiving votes in the latest Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Men's Division I National Team Rankings. 15 years ago, the Tide started the season 11-0 before falling to Arkansas, 4-3, on March 2, 2003.
Last weekend the Tide won its first road match of the season when UA shutout Tulsa, 4-0 in Tulsa, Okla. The shutout victory marked the sixth time Alabama has held an opponent without a point this season.
Sophomores Edson Ortiz and Alexey Nesterov have compiled 6-0 records in singles play to lead the Tide. In singles competition, UA is an outstanding 31-3 in matches this season. In doubles play, junior Mazen Osama and Ortiz are 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot so far in 2018 and ranked No. 22 in the country.
Pepperdine has started the season at 1-4, with its lone win coming over South Alabama, 4-2, on Jan. 28 at the ITA Kick-Off Tournament in Gainesville, Fla.
San Diego State is still looking for its first win of the season and will take on No. 14 Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., tomorrow night before traveling to Tuscaloosa. Lipscomb will take on Tennessee Tech on Saturday before competing against the Tide on Sunday. The Bison is 2-1 on the season with wins over Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay.
