Portious Warren is in her first year as a member of the Alabama track & field team. The junior from Matura, Trinidad & Tobago was as three-time NJCAA national champion in the shot put at Central Arizona College before transferring to UA over the summer. In her second meet with the Tide at Vanderbilt on Jan. 18, she posted two of the top three indoor shot put marks in school history.
Why did you pick Alabama?
Portious Warren: "I picked Alabama because it felt like home when I was here for my visit. The weather was a lot more like home compared to the other schools where it was either cooler or somewhere I knew I wouldn't enjoy the weather. Once I talked to coach (Dan Waters), we discussed not just me being an athlete at Alabama, but my life after Alabama and where my education and athletic preparation could take me."
What was the transition like from junior college to Alabama?
PW: "The transition has been very smooth actually. I was expecting it to be much more difficult coming from a junior college because this conference is so competitive but I feel pretty good about how I've competed so far this season."
What has been the key to your success so far this season?
PW: "I think the key is knowing you make every mistake for a reason, and my first meet didn't go as planned, but I learned from it. I think I'm discovering the most I can from a bad experience and make it something positive. I think that's the key to why I've been going the way I have so far."
What are your goals for this season?
PW: "My main goal for this season is to get over 17 meters (55 feet). That's my first goal and my certain goal, and just see how far my training can carry me."
What are your long-term goals for your time at Alabama?
PW: "I want to be the best athlete I can be and everyday try to be a better version of myself. Xan I hit that 18 meter (59 feet) barrier? What goals can I create once I accomplish that?"
How did your junior college experience prepare you for Alabama?
PW: "At Central Arizona College, they treat athletes with a certain level of respect. They prepare you for what is to come, they don't just prepare you for the JUCO level, but they prepare you for life in general, and I guess that played a major part in me becoming the athlete and person I am now."
