Alabama Rowing Sweeps Eastern Michigan in Spring Opener Saturday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama rowing opened its spring season with a convincing win over Eastern Michigan Saturday, sweeping the Eagles over 16 separate 1,000-meter pieces on the Black Warrior River.
"Overall, we did a good job of going out and racing," Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. "As we go through this season, it's going to get tougher and tougher, so our goal is to make those changes now, before the meat of our schedule hits in April. It was good to go out and get a chance to get some racing under our belt and find a way to compete. It was a good way to start off the spring season."
The Crimson Tide's First Varsity 8+, "The Battle Ship" crew posted its fastest time of the day in its first 1,000-meter piece, crossing the line in 3:41.99, while posting three more sub-3:50 times, rounding out with a 3:46.97 in the final session. Alabama's second 1V8+ crew, "Cashman", racked up its fastest time of the day in the first session with a time of 3:45.9.
"Dr. Robert E. Witt" turned in its fastest time in the fourth session of Second Varsity 8+ with a time of 3:52.74, while "Mal Moore" turned in its fastest time of 3:52.05 in the first session.
The Crimson Tide raced one crew in the First Varsity 4+, with "Moxie" winning all four sessions, with its fastest time of 4:24.01 in the first session. Alabama raced two crews in the Second Varsity 4+, with "Yellow Hammer" winning all four with its fastest time of 4:21.6 in the first session, and "Synergy" placing second in all four with its fastest time of 4:25.62 in the second session.
Despite the rain, a large crowd came out to help kick off the Tide's season opener.
"I was really excited to see the crowd we had," Davis said. "I figured with the rain, we weren't going to have fairly many people show up, but low and behold we had people on the railing and it was a great crowd. I'm excited the fans felt it was worth their while to come down and see us and cheer us on. It's always good to have people cheering for you when you get to the finish line and the fans certainly stepped it up today, so kudos to the fans. Our girls appreciate it."
Next up, Alabama will remain at home when it welcomes SMU on Saturday, March 3 before hosting its Crimson Tide Invitational on Saturday, March 24. The Invitational will feature Creighton, Jacksonville and Dayton and will also serve as the Tide's senior day and its annual Power of Pink event.
